My students are first graders (6 or 7 years old) who all qualify for free lunch. Most of them live in our city's roughest housing project. When money is always tight, and the choice is between buying books or food, books always lose. Lack of access to books is a huge detriment to emerging literacy. In times of tight school district budgets, I often rely on the public library to get books for my students, but when my students later ask to see that book, the one they loved, the one they connected with, I have to tell them, "I don't have it anymore. I had to give it back to the library." The books I'm asking for are the ones my students have loved and asked for over and over. I don't want to deny them the opportunity to connect with great books anymore.
