I am a firm believer that children learn through play. Children talk and listen when they play and because of this learn appropriate communication skills. Aside from this, children can learn crucial literacy, math, and science skills through role-play and hands-on activities. When students are engaged in their learning activities, true learning begins. Research shows that children who engage in pretend play have more sophisticated levels of interaction with others. More and more evidence supports the connections between cognitive ability and high quality pretend play. By helping me fund my project, you will be providing me the ability to engage my students in high quality pretend play. Approximately 25% of the students in my classroom receive Special Education services and over 75% are economically disadvantaged. For many of these children, this will be their first time attending school, as I am a PreK Collaborative teacher. With your support, I strive to create a classroom of acceptance and learning. Each student in my classroom has various educational needs to be successful and by funding his project I will be able to provide the differentiation they need. Many of these students do not have access to literature outside of the classroom and this project would allow them to have several books of varying topics for them to enjoy in our classroom reading station and at home. "If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” – Stephen King. Reading and writing are essential skills needed in daily life and through this project we will cultivate a love for both in each of the students in my classroom.
