Guided reading hands-on kits will give me the opportunity to observe students as they read from a text at their instructional reading levels.
The students in my room need to read a variety of text for multiple purposes. The students also need to find evidence to support their learning. Having the hands-on kits will allow my students to gain experience by reading nonfiction and fiction text, while being able to find key details, compare and contrast, summarize, discuss vocabulary and find the theme for multiple grade level texts.
My goal is to help my students develop strategies to apply independently. The small group material will focus on processes integral to reading proficiently such as cross-checking print and meaning information, rather than on learning a particular book’s word meanings. During guided reading, I will monitor student reading processes and check that text are within students’ grasps, allowing students to assemble their newly acquired skills into a smooth, integrated reading system.
Plus, guided reading is enjoyable! This is where I can sit down with my students and read. Guided reading offers a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of reading with my students.
