My students are kinder-5th grade kids at two schools in Arizona. Most of my children are especially inspired by what I like to call "Performance Based Learning" projects which involve learning and rehearsing songs, as well as coming up with movements that fit the lyrics, and figuring out instrumental parts that can be played on piano, drums, and other instruments to make our performances more exciting. Many of my kids are from high poverty communities, and the chance to play instruments is one that is financially out of reach for many (if not most) of them. They love to work with instruments to improvise and work on original music in small groups, as well as the more traditional aspects of learning to read and play music.
