In the first semester at our early college high school, Freshmen take Dual Credit College Readiness. During this course they think about values and goals. We tie the need for service learning and community commitments to their personal aspirations. Let's face it- we are BETTER TOGETHER! We can achieve more by helping others. In the second semester, students take public speaking, and they're ready for this project. Our students will record themselves reading a book for a partner elementary school, and they will prepare manipulatives that the students can use while listening. The books, manipulatives, and a QR code are bundled in a box to allow younger students to develop a love for reading while boosting their skills. Meanwhile, my students are practicing their speaking skills and earning a service learning endorsement through our community college. It's a win-win!
