Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play a musical instrument, aside from the small classroom percussion instruments at our school. My upper elementary students have played these small classroom instruments for years, and they desperately need a new challenge with musical instruments that match their developmental level. My students are ready to learn how to accompany songs with chords and create their own music using chordal accompaniment. The ukulele is the perfect instrument for our needs, because (for a relatively low cost) it will expand our music curriculum in nearly every direction, allowing students to learn about instrument technique, chord structure, song composition, and more. The ukulele is also relevant to the students’ interests and their experience of music outside of school. Once, I gently mentioned to a class that I was planning to apply for a grant for ukuleles, and I asked them to confirm if that would be something of high interest to them. The entire class raised their hands immediately and enthusiastically! I believe this donation of ukuleles would springboard my upper elementary students into a new level of learning and loving music that will enrich their lives for years to come.
