My students are all special education students with disabilities that impact their learning. They are the hardest working bunch of kids and every ounce of growth they show takes twice as much of their effort. Many of them have memory or processing issues which slow down their learning. A regular student may need to practice a skill 4-5 times to master, my students need to practice it 10-15 times, or more. The school I teach in is a high poverty school. Even though their income is low, the Hispanic families I work with understand the importance of education and it shows in their children. Some of my students are reading 2-3 grade levels below their classmates. All these students qualify for extra help from teachers like me, and go to after-school tutoring as well. It takes a village of dedicated teachers to educate these students. Unfortunetly, due to the number of students and their needs, I am only able to be with them in the classroom for 30-40 minutes per subject area.
