My students are a mix of ESL students and students who are in the first stages of being identified for Special Education. So hands-on experiences are key to their success in learning and showing understanding. Our school district is one of the largest in the country, while our city is only 500,000. Our school hosts a large number of refugee students from Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. It's not uncommon for refugee students to enter my classroom having NEVER attended school before. So besides learning English, they also are struggling to understand school social norms. Most students receive 100% free breakfast and lunch as well as assistance from the local food and clothing banks. Our school is about 50% neighborhood school students and 50% of students are bussed in from a poverty stricken neighborhood about 4 miles away. Our school is a fine arts magnet, so students receive art, music, dance and drama classes two times a week.
