Our school is in a rural community. My students are 4th-6th grade students who receive special education supports and spend the majority of the day in my room- the resource room. However, many of my students are still at the literacy levels of Kindergarten-2nd grade. Many of them are starting to show frustration with reading because they are so far below their general education peers.
They have fun personalities and love to listen to read alouds. I try to make time each day to read from a chapter book to spark their imaginations and interest. I have brought a personal cd player with one set of headphones for them to use to listen to stories. They ask to use this center frequently and since only one student can use it at a time, they get discouraged how little they are able to use it as they wait their turn. We are quickly working through our limited read-along library as well.
