Wenonah Elementary serves approximately 250 students with 90% being eligible to receive free or reduced lunch. My students are in grades kindergarten through fifth and have unique "labels" that far too often dictate where they receive an education. However, these labels do not begin to define my students or their capabilities. Each of my students, like all other children, have unique strengths, interests, preferences, and needs. However, one need that many of my students share (LIKE ALL OTHER CHILDREN!) is a break from overstimulating and demanding environments. Students' brains receive steady streams of sensory information throughout the day. Students with disabilities often have difficulty processing this information and are oversensitive or undersensitive to the world around them. Sensory rooms help students appropriately regulate and respond to challenging environments, such as the general education classroom.
