One thing we know about life is that challenges happen, and how we face them builds character. One year ago, many students in our district experienced that first-hand when Hurricane Harvey flooded our community. Another related issue concerning students today is feeling safe. Students today often are aware of the violence that happens far too often in our communities. One challenge facing our middle school as a brand new school is lack of funding for technology. Opening a new school is costly, and there are no funds available for student devices. Therefore, I am seeking assistance to provide my students with the needed technology to support the way they naturally learn in this day and time. Our first project-based learning unit is called Still I Rise, and allows our students to explore this question: How can we improve safety in our schools in our district? Students will act as safety inspectors for WLMS, and they will create a plan and communications campaign about techniques and programs used at this school or should be used, to protect students, faculty, and visitors on campus. Our district superintendent (school safety is her priority) will help launch our project with a discussion, and a team of students will present their plan to the district school board. For this project, students will assume the role of safety inspectors for WLMS. They will create a plan and communications campaign about techniques and programs used at this school to protect students, faculty, and visitors on campus. I am writing my grant to seek Chromebooks to allow us to work collaboratively via Google apps, and research topics related to social studies topics. will enhance our students' experiences by allowing them to work collaboratively in Google Classroom and using a variety of technology tools. We also will use other tools for communications, such as FlipGrid and Padlet.
