I currently teach in an urban area that is heavily populated with Hispanic children (or English as a second language populace). They are excited about the imaginative power of books and like to listen to me read books to them. Contrarily, many of them ask that I stop and explain what a word(s) mean. This stifles their comprehension abilities. Even more saddening is the fact that our resources are limited in providing books that could be used to build their vocabulary each student at a time. My class has been motivated since the beginning of the year (in the area of reading) to become the brightest and most passionate readers possible. However, I know that in order to achieve this goal they'll need to increase their vocabulary through defining words and studying them.
