I am a special education teacher and in the past 8 years I have had the pleasure of working with many non-verbal students. It has become my desire to advocate for those who are unable to speak. Currently, I have 6 students in my classroom that are non-verbal (or severe language delays) and would greatly benefit from having a speech generated device (SGD). The iPad will be installed with the LAMP Words For Life™, a full English vocabulary augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) language app that will allow the student access to over 3000 words. Some of you may have lost your voice for a couple of days due to an illness but imagine, for a moment, not ever having a voice. Now picture a student sitting the classroom with no way to ask for basic needs (e.g., I need the bathroom, I need a drink, I need the nurse) and sadly, no way to join in the conversations around. Your gift of an iPad will open the many doors and allow my students to be a part of their community.
