With the requested chess timers, chess sets, batteries, and score pads, the main goal was to start a chess club to promote social and emotional healing as students returned together at school. However, chess also encourages focus and elevates creativity and a myriad of other brain-enriching effects. Chess helps students with learning disabilities focus, develop sportsmanship, and supports all students to feel self-confident. The critical thing is that students will play face-to-face at school, creating community. Students were helping glue pieces of old chess pieces together to creat new sets so all could play. Following them on the club blog, and they are enthusiastic about the opportunity and are anxious for the next meeting of the club.
