Most of the science courses I teach require the use of a scientific calculator at some point. For some courses my students need calculators for one unit of learning, while other courses I teach use a scientific calculator all year long. Highlighters and colored pencils are used all year in all my courses. For many of the students in my classroom, the fact that they don't have access to a scientific calculator and supplies is a barrier to their learning. The reason given is that there is not enough money at home to purchase a scientific calculator and supplies. A class set of scientific calculators and supplies would address the issue of equitable access for every student in my classroom.
