I teach three sets of very diverse regular and special education students. My students are on various educational levels. Some of my students struggle in reading, which causes them to struggle in math (word problems). We are in a very small and poor community. Our school is Title I and on the "focus" schools list trying to improve student achievement on testing. My students LOVE it when I am able to read to them. They also enjoy when I put a related math book to the current concept on the board for them to read when finished early. The math books can help gain many students attention and can develop a connection across the curriculum by using literacy in a math classroom.
