My 7th grade students are yearning to read the 2015 Truman award nominees in their literature circles. They want to read the same book with their peers and share their varying opinions and viewpoints. I want to organize literature circles which will give them the freedom to read the same book with three of their peers instead of reading the same book as a whole class. This project is student-driven rather than teacher-driven. If my students are given choice in what they read, their reading skills will develop because they will more motivated to read a book that interests them. My school lacks the resources for a group of four students to read the same Truman award book at the same time. In addition, my students need more opportunity to read text with social issue themes to help guide their conversations and perspectives.I want them to grow as readers by witnessing how literature can expand their viewpoints and ideas.
