The intent of this project is to develop cross-curricular skills in the areas of art, English, and science. Students will be tasked with the responsibility of using the knowledge they glean about the properties of rocks and minerals to create their own jewelry. Each student will become in expert in their given rock or mineral and, through random lottery, be assigned a specific piece of jewelry to make that will abstractly represent the concrete properties of their rock or mineral. The students will take scientific terminology and turn it into poetic representations, which in turn will inform their jewelry design. The students will have to navigate the complexities of meeting their real world client's desires while balancing the authenticity of their representation. They will have to stand up in front of their colleagues and sell their representation to their client. They will have to justify why they chose to listen to or diverge from the client's original request and persuade the audience of their vision. In my past experience, I have discovered that middle school students have the capacity to make strong abstract representations of concrete ideas. This has been shown when they were asked to make wearable papier-mache mask based on an element from the periodic table. They were required to symbolized five of that particular element's physical or chemical properties. The bulk of the works produced were on the verge of masterful.
