My students have a wide variety of reading skills. In second grade, many feel pressured to move on from picture books to chapter books, and it is often the year that will make or break a lifelong reader. Graphic novels provide the perfect bridge from picture books to chapter books, but are also fantastic reads on their own. This is one area of my classroom that lacks depth, and it is the one area that students regularly request for me to buy more books! Graphic novels ARE real books, and when a child falls in love with a series, we should do everything we can to foster that love. Graphic novels offer rich language and dialogue, encourage inferencing and most importantly, are engaging to readers at all levels. In short, these are some of the most valuable tools for my students. Thanks for considering!
