This is my third year in this classroom. With it I inherited a mountain of files, books and materials, much of it wonderful and some of it...outdated (like the poster showing how to use a rotary phone to call for help and the file folder I reused which was labeled for the ‘57-‘58 school year.) Schools have always been busy places but we are finally coming to understand that the physical environment serves as the “third teacher.” Rooms that are overly cluttered and disorganized are difficult to learn in and honestly, difficult to teach in. I have done a major overhaul of our “third teacher” and it feels incredible. The final frontier has been a purge and reorganization of our classroom library. I have sorted books by genre (understanding genre is a second grade standard) and will be labeling each book and bin accordingly. Ive repurposed everything I can but am at a point where size, uniformity and condition of containers will make a big difference. It is this I am asking for your help with, as well as one, large basket of natural materials to add beauty to our space and other storage needs.
