Students enter second-grade on different reading levels. Some students are strong readers while others are falling behind which causes learning gaps in all academic areas. When finding interventions to help struggling readers, teachers are often given a computer program to assign lessons for students. While the data collecting element is useful, students already have an excessive amount of screen time both at school and at home. Using the Hand2Mind literacy Versa Tiles will allow students to build their phonics skills and correct their own mistakes with the self-correcting element that would build skills without adding to unwanted screen time. Focusing on foundational reading and providing every possible intervention will help to close those learning gaps for many students. I believe students need support to reach higher reading levels to help them to have life-long mastery in education and in their future careers. Reading is the key to a strong, academic future. As a teacher, I want to create strong, passionate readers who will have access to the careers that they want in the future.
