Who doesn't love pulling out the "math toy" boxes at school? I know that I do, and so do my students! As I work with my students on mastering fundamental math skills, I notice that they learn best when we have math manipulatives to use. The more, the better! As with planning for students with disabilities; the diversity of my manipulatives needs to be individualized and meaningful to each of my students' unique abilities.
Evidence-based research suggests that hands-on learning using engaging materials has a significant impact on the learning outcomes for students with severe intellectual disabilities. The hands-on materials I am requesting will help me provide such learning experiences for my students. Specifically: the graphing aides will help students visual data, the counting materials will help us sort and categorize numbers, and the whiteboards will help me emphasize these skills during small group instruction.
I want to provide my students with as many opportunities for success as possible. The lessons that I will teach using these math materials will help my students become more independent learners and reach their I.E.P. goals. For my students, the mastery of such fundamental math skills is crucial to their success as young adults working towards living and vocational goals in our community.
Thank you for your continued and well-appreciated support!
