Multi-sensory activities increase retention and generalization of new and learned skills. This project includes three important multi-sensory materials that will be used on a daily basis: kinetic sand to increase tactile and sensory integration, Touch and Match pictures to objects activity sets and a 6' X 9' rug allowing children to sit comfortable on the floor for circle time and structured therapy activities. Discovery and manipulation of kinetic sand provides exceptional tactile and sensory input, as well as facilitating symbolic/pretend play schemes, turn taking and social communication. It can provide motivation and reinforcement for participation and interaction during therapy sessions. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I serve a wide range of ages and abilities. The Touch and Match pictures to objects activity sets will serve the Pre-kindergarten students as well as the special needs students facilitating increased visual reinforcement, task repetition and identification of common objects to their matching picture. Not all children perform well sitting in a regular chair at a table, nor are some special needs students able to sit at a table to participate in therapy. Attending to a story or structured activity sitting on a rug facilitates increased opportunities for movement, positioning and social-pragmatic language development.
