Digital cameras, with waterproof and freeze proof options for our weather conditions, allow our students to capture critical content from their field studies to express through multimedia productions resulting in exceptional science and technology learning. While rafting the Kenai River in the culmination of a salmon study our students will use these cameras to photograph red salmon spawning, eagles feeding on salmon, people fishing them, and hopefully brown bear too. They will photograph aspects of the watershed and its tributaries important to the lifecycle of the salmon. These photographs are used to tell the story of the salmon lifecycle using pictures taken by students using these cameras. They capture the experience, represent key content and become skilled in technology application. During Winter Survival Camp, our students will photographs the steps to building an effective snow shelter, the process of building a fire in the wild, means to signal for help in an emergency and wilderness first aid. These photographs will be used in PowerPoint presentations and Prezi presentation to teach younger students winter survival skills. Our Marine Biology and Beach Ecology field study, on the remote shores of Kachemak Bay focus on identifying over 150 species of invertebrates and classifying them into phylum. This rigorous and exciting science adventure will be captured digitally and the images used in the classroom to produce photo posters, PowerPoints and digital stories. Our students are blessed to live in Alaska. I work hard to provide rich life experiences that strengthen their Alaskan roots, and rigorous academic experiences enabling them to become highly literate. The simple addition of these cameras will bring an important addition to their education, that of multimedia production.
