Everything we do in reading is always geared towards STAAR. This means the text isn't always relevant to my students and their interests. I want my students to know that reading can be fun and interesting. Maximilian & the Mystery of the Guardian Angel: A Bilingual Lucha Libre Thriller, is a great book. It's funny, has great opportunities for vocabulary enrichment, it's relevant to their interest and comes in BOTH English and Spanish, side by side. This is particularly important since I have a mixed class with some students speaking only English and some speaking only Spanish. This makes it incredibly difficult for all of us to do book study on the same book. Previously when working on this book study project, I have had to borrow books from public and school libraries all over my city. We never seem to be able to find enough copies for every student, or sometimes libraries are unwilling to lend them to us. I have done this project for 3 years now, and this book really changes my students perspective on reading. By the end of our book study, they are able to use the vocabulary correctly when we make our own Lucha Libre comic strips, can make connections within the text and improve their inferencing skills. Students who were previously reluctant to read end up asking for the next book in the series!
