Classroom Economy is a class management system designed to teach financial responsibility. Students earn school/pretend dollars in order to rent their desks. Each student has a job that they perform for the entire school year. Bonuses are earned for such things as extra book reports, perfect spelling test scores, and good character traits. Fines are received for such things as not completing assignments, excessive talking, and disrespect. Any dollars that a student has left over each week after paying rent and fines can be saved for an auction that will take place at the end of each month starting with September and ending in May. By having significant auction items, students will be motivated to earn and save as much money as they can for the monthly auctions. The project materials I have selected are intended to last all year. Therefore, only a handful of the items will be available for each monthly auction. The football, basketballs, and softball will be autographed by our high school players and coaches of each sport. In my experience, items such as the snap circuits, slime, and dot-to-dot books are things that generate a lot of student interest. The highest bidder for each item will take ownership of it and get to take it home. The items will not remain at school once they are sold at an auction. I will also be offering no-cost items each month such as front-of-the-lunch line passes, homework passes, and appropriate choices of YouTube videos to show to the class.
