Our young children are coming into a world with more than its share of ecological challenges. The need to live as stewards of the earth is imperative for the next generation's well-being and for the health and well-being of the planet itself. My kindergartners will love having worms to care for and to feed (we've rescued many a worm from the sidewalk!), but they will also have the daily experience of actually composting their snack waste and seeing it become soil instead of garbage. The children will understand the recycling of organic waste AND they will develop an excellent habit.
