"Dude, suckin' at something is the first step to being sorta good at something." - Jake the Dog, Adventure Time. I live by these words and I teach my students to as well! Working with a population who has written themselves off as "not the school type" means my biggest challenge is getting them to see themselves as belonging in the classroom. I see my role as an English teacher as helping them to see themselves as scholars, poets, and academics!
