The students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds with exceptionalities requiring specialized attention and understanding to provide them with the best education possible needed to help them identify and embrace their gifts and potential. Many of my students have a range of cognitive abilities, mental health needs, and come from a background of trauma, violent home communities, and poverty. These students require a calm, nonjudgmental, environment to acquire academic skills and practice appropriate expression and control of their emotions. For most of them, hands-on learning is best with attention to sensory needs. It is an area often requiring finances provided by grant monies. I work tirelessly with colleagues to provide these opportunities to all our students. We have seen amazing transformations, unearthed special talents, and inspired new interests.
