Upon first glance, the students of my classroom appear like other typical children their age; in fact, in many ways they are like their 9 year old peers. What is different about this population of students is the fact that they come from socio-economically disadvantaged families. All students in my classroom receive a free breakfast each morning; most of them receive reduced or free lunches. Some of my students will receive their only nourishment at school as their parents are unable to find enough money in their budget to purchase food. Behind some of the faces, may be a student who is faced with the challenge of "parenting" younger siblings; a student whose mother or father is incarcerated; or a student who doesn't know where they will live from month to month. As these families struggle to provide the essentials of living, these children don't have what many of their counterparts consider necessities: cable television, computers, internet access, and books.
