I teach 1st grade in a small town in West Michigan. While it used to be a quiet rural community, the demographics have changed over the years. Troubled economic times for families have led to stresses that directly affect the children in this community. Families now just scraping by are focused on meeting basic needs and have less time to spend supporting their children's academic needs. We, as teachers, are trying to address this in our classrooms by making the school day as "rich" as possible.
