I teach all levels of students from those with a learning disability to gifted. Every student can benefit from working in small groups with the teacher to small group assignments on their own. Our students are very accomplished at collaborating in small groups on paper or by adding information to a Chromebook, individually. What my social studies students need is the ability to work together in groups of 4-5 students on a single activity or document where all of them can see the changes. Additionally, I teach ancient history up to the European explorers. This means that students need to understand maps and be able to relate to where on the earth they are learning about in a visual manner. We do not have large maps in our classrooms any more as most either wore out, are out of date, or are not being replaced. As you can imagine, it is difficult for an adult to be able to picture where Ancient Greece, Mesopotamia is located or how the Silk Road trade route connects to the Trans-Saharan trade routes. What I am proposing is to set up a collaboration station that is portable and can be used in social studies or any other 6th grade classroom that wants to design lesson plans for its use. The portable collaboration station will be a 40 inch smart television attached to a portable stand on wheels. Students will be using their Chromebook to complete collaborative assignments that will be viewed by the small group on the television screen. These assignments may take the form of mapping, timelines, publishing a website or a book, completing vocabulary words and crossword puzzles, working out a math problem, etc.
