My students attend a public middle school that embodies the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy, empowering young students to become lifelong learners by making real world connections. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and home environments. A large portion of our students come from lower income communities. Despite these disadvantages, they persevere and overcome, setting out to be productive contributors in society. I teach two 7th grade English Language Arts. Through the use of technology and other resources, I strive to engage my students in the world of literacy and create lifelong readers. I believe that in order for students to truly love the written word, they must be given the opportunity to see themselves in the literature they read and write. Texts must give students an opportunity to see themselves and explore characters and circumstances different from themselves.
