Flexible seating in my classroom is critical. My students need to be constantly moving around to activate their minds and keep them on task. Many of my students have a disability that makes it difficult for them to focus on a given task. The different forms of seating will give the students the ability to listen and work independently without distractions. Some students need to stand while they work, some need to sit on the ground, while other needs to sway back and forth in their seats. The spooner board will be able to give students the ability to work out problems on the whiteboard/smart board while rocking back and forth. The exercise ball chairs will be used for students who would like to sit, yet need to bounce or exercise their legs. The wobble chair and learning stool will be used for my students who like to move a lot. They will have the ability to rock back and forth, spin, and sway. Lastly, the stability cushion will be used for individual students who need to bring a flexible seating into a regular education classroom. Specific students need to have flexible seating in all of their classes. All of these seating options will assist my students to stay focused on their academic goal instead of becoming distracted.
Creating flexible seating gives my students the ability to focus on their academics. If they aren’t able to move or are not comfortable, learning is lost. This can result in multiple behaviors due to their disabilities. Keeping their bodies active, activates their brain to learn and succeed in all academic areas.
