My students need Meet Edison robots to explore Disaster Robotics through a timely hands-on learning project! The lesson is titled: Disaster City - How can robots help in post-disaster recovery efforts? Using creative thinking and problem solving, student groups will each come up with their own natural disaster situation (land, air or water) and conceptualize how the robot can provide a solution. They will use the engineering design process to identify the problem, research, brainstorm solutions, and choose the best solution. The fun begins when they create a physical map of their disaster area and program their robot to complete a task to help in the post-disaster recovery effort! They become controllers, programmers and builders of robots, each group testing their solutions in a fun, hands-on, and engaging way. I want to send ALL of my eighth grade students off to high school wanting to learn more about robotics and computer science. A classroom set of Meet Edison robots would help me bring excitement and connections to computer science into the classroom. Side note: The inspiration for this lesson came from an article by Aaron Dubrow at NSF about Robin Murphy’s leadership and research in using robots in recovery efforts. A wonderful role model!
