Writing is a necessary and essential skill for my talented 7th graders. Whether writing an essay about a famous novel or composing their own literary masterpiece, my students practice their writing every single day. They brainstorm, collect evidence, draft, revise and edit before they publish their final product. Any author will tell you that the process is critical and takes time and patience. We use a writer’s workshop approach to writing where students have the opportunity to use each other as sounding boards and editors for their work. However, without printing capabilities, the process often gets lost. Rewriting a multi-page essay long-hand is painstaking, and students often lose patience. A classroom printer will allow my students to see themselves as serious writers. The printer will give students the ability to create multiple drafts that can be shared and reviewed. Also, printed pages add polish to the kid’s work and give them a sense that their words are valuable.
