On my campus, the majority of our students struggle with various math concepts including number sense and place value. Many of them are visual or kinesthetic learners which means that manipulatives play an important role in keeping them engaged. We need bean bag chairs, foam dice, number tiles and other math manipulatives. Base ten blocks are an essential learning tool that can be used for differentiated instruction within the classroom. Manipulatives are vital when introducing new math concepts like finding the value of a group of coins. Using actual coins makes learning this concept fun and takes the difficulty down to a minimum. The other challenge is that my students love to move around and need flexible seating options to accommodate their mode of learning.
