My brilliant, bilingual students are currently learning how to add and subtract two three-digit numbers. Most of them are doing it successfully, but then, if you ask them to subtract ten from their answer, they'll pull out a pencil and paper to subtract vertically. Our current, teacher-funded library of math manipulatives only includes place value blocks, place value disks and centimeter cubes. We desperately need more concrete resources so that students understand how far 90 is from 100. I have carefully curated a list of manipulatives that will be most useful in our classroom and hardest to replace with printables. Erasable spaces lessen student anxiety about experimenting with new math concepts, while the number lines will enhance our understanding of the relationship between numbers. Geo-boards, tiles and tangrams will allow us to examine the differences between shapes while expressing our creativity. Most critically, double-sided counters and linking cubes will assist in targeted interventions for second-grade students still struggling with facts within 10. Our most expensive request, a set of Legos, will form the foundation for STEAM boxes and a classroom makerspace. So many makerspace items, like toothpicks and pipe cleaners, can be added with our limited budget, but the Legos would be out of reach. Thank you so much for considering our project! Any contribution you can make will get us that much closer to 100.
