The population in our rural town is increasing, but our state funding is not. Because of this, our District Budget is not able to prioritize laboratory technology, and our future scientists are missing opportunities. "Why isn't there a cure yet?" "Is that all we know about this?" "I have an idea for future studies!" My future oncologists and pathologists love viewing histology slides, creating their own wet mount slides, and sharing their discoveries. Currently, we are using a limited number of working microscopes- most of them over 10 years old. This project was created to ensure that technology is not limiting the skill development, content mastery, or engagement levels of my college-prep students. By supplying each lab group (6 groups of 4 students) with a USB capable microscope, it would allow my students to view histology samples at high magnification, share them with each other by presenting them on a laptop screen instead of having to individually view through the scope, and discuss their findings. By continuing to foster their interest through engagement and collaboration, we are supporting our next generation of scientists!
