We are an awesome school, but as in many districts, our literacy rates could use some improvement. Kindergarten and First Grade especially are crucial times for students as they develop fundamental reading skills. Upon entering our school, many of these students have little prior experience with books and reading. With funding, I can develop a literature-based art program for Kindergarten and First Grade that would introduce them to a variety of books while helping to foster a love of reading by connecting the stories to fun, creative art projects. Some of the projects I have in mind include Valentine Heart Sculptures, Mixed-Media Hat Designs, Painted Flower Gardens, and Oil Pastel Fish. Through these art projects, Kinders and First Graders can connect to the stories, while at the same time, the stories will help to inspire creative, beautiful works of art.
