Most of my students are apartment dwellers in a high-density urban neighborhood in Chicago. Many of my students have had little experience interacting with the natural environment. A school garden will give my students hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in science and nutrition. Designing and creating a garden will help my students develop life skills including problem-solving, communicating with others and working together. Caring for plants will help my students develop respect and appreciation for the natural world and inspire environmental stewardship. My students will increase their knowledge about fruits and vegetables and hopefully improve their attitudes in regards to their own food choices.
