Students come in all shapes and sizes. I have the smallest classroom in the high school and the biggest class sizes. Traditional student desks do not leave any room for collaboration among students and give very little room to move in the classroom. I have opted for round tables and chairs for my students to learn in. I currently use old kitchen tables that were bought at a yard sale and painted by an art teacher to be used in his elementary classroom. When the old elementary school closed, the school combined with another elementary school in town. These tables sat waiting for students to use them. Then Freshman Success 101 was developed in the curriculum for the high school. I have been using the tables for the past few years, but as time passes, so does the life of the tables. Students love the freedom they have to encourage and collaborate with other students in class while planning out their futures after high school. Every student develops a 10-year plan for post-secondary success, so why not make this the best experience they can have? This includes providing the students with the best possible "student desks."
