My students all have an autistic diagnosis, are 3-5 years old and usually enter my class after Early Intervention releases them on their 3rd birthday. My classroom is designated as a K0/K1 substantially separate classroom. Students must be 3 by September 1st to enter K0, and 4 by September 1 to enter K1. The cognitive abilities of my students, as well as the severity of their autism is as different as each of their personalities. My school is a K0 through grade 5 school in a lower economic, urban neighborhood, where everyone qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. We have eight substantially separate classes of children with autism, many of whom participate in inclusion opportunities throughout the school day.
