I choose to teach at High Poverty schools because it's where I'm needed the most. Many of my students are blessed enough to come from loving homes with hardworking parents who may not have the means to provide them with the basic school supplies. At the same time, I have had many students who are raising their younger siblings, dealing with neglect, coming from foster homes, and only have experienced a world of hurt, frustration, failure, and anger. It's a school-wide expectation that students come to my classroom ready to learn. Most of them are reading at a 2nd grade level, have never been successful in school, and have the misconception that 5th grade will be just like every other year. My students quickly learn how to cope with their feelings in a healthy way. They learn that their circumstance cannot be used as an excuse. They learn to live out the meaning of empathy, perseverance, and hard work.
