In my classroom, I am wanting to create a couple of different "safe and calming" spots in the classroom where students can go to when they feel overwhelmed, frustrated and need the chance to independently "reset" themselves. With heart-wrenching difficulties in their lives such as broken homes, lack of daily resources and attention, my students sometimes struggle to control their emotions. In these "safe and calming" spots in our classroom, I would like to have multiple areas where they can go in order to gather their emotions before returning to myself and their friends. I want to provide them with a weighted blanket and other small items to help comfort and lower their heightened emotions. Also, comfortable seating will help set a clear divide from the rest of the classroom where they will be able to "reset" themselves calmly. My students mean the world to me. Despite the fact I cannot change various challenges in their lives when they're NOT with me, I wish to provide them with a safe, calm and love-filled environment for the time they ARE with me. Thank you for taking the time to read about these kiddos who mean so much to me. Anything helps! "Sometimes the one thing your students NEED MOST has nothing to do with what's on the lesson plan."
