Our school is located in a wonderfully diverse neighborhood where hardworking people try to stay afloat in the most expensive city in America. The community surrounding the school is filled with strip malls, fast food restaurants, and chain stores. There is a noticeable lack of opportunities in this area of town to participate in any kind of culturally rich art experiences. My students' main recreational activities revolve around television sets and cell phones. Because of this passive entertainment, they have yet to discover that they can play an active roll in creating a dynamic, creative, and meaningful world for themselves.
