For the past year, I have been incorporating flexible seating into the classroom. I began by adding small items that could be used with the tables and chair we already had. When I saw the kids' excitement over the new choices, I continued to research other ways to provide choices for the students. Slowly, I have been able to add variety to the seating options, which has just increased the enthusiasm and engagement of the students (which is no easy task in our modern device driven world!). Students learn better in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable and one that supports their individual needs--one of those needs is often standing or moving while completing their work. After adding so many features to our room for seating, the time has come to expand the desk and table choices. These stand-up desks offer a workspace that meets the needs of students that benefit from the opportunity to stand or stretch while working on their independent work. This piece of furniture also has a swinging foot rest, that gives the additional opportunity for movement, without causing a noisy disruption to those needing a quiet environment.
