Some of my students come to school with zero language. They are unable to communicate verbally for various reasons and my job is to give each student a voice so they are able to make choices for themselves and express their needs. Most students are able to learn how to speak verbally or using sign language. I have a handful of students who are not responding to learning how to communicate verbally. When we have students like this we use a device called an augmentative communication device. This device is used to supplement or replace verbal speech for those with speech and language impairments. We generally have 2-5 students per session who fall under this category. When we have students who do not respond we begin to teach them how to use this augmentative communication device. We are currently using the app Cough Drop. This app allows communication boards to be used both at home and at school so the students can practice their newly learned skill both in school and at home. This reinforces the skill as most language and communication is learned in the home and not at school. My district does not have the budget to issue multiple iPads per classroom. I have used our 1 classroom iPad with select students and have seen success. I would like to provide each student with the opportunity to use this device throughout the day so they can gain the instruction they need to be successful in life.
