Having just become a STEAM school this year, we are low on resources and funding. We are trying to build an appropriate classroom library containing more books on STEAM based topics, such as space. These books would help the students with increasing their foundational reading skills, deepening their love of literacy, and exposing them to possible future careers and important historical events and figures. Through their collaboration in STEAM-based literature circles, we have already begun to see growth in our student’s use of academic vocabulary, motivation to learn, and classroom engagement. Not only is their behavior and attitude towards reading changing, their work ethic and academic success is also improving. In order to continue best serving our students, we need your help with providing interesting, relevant, and recent literature for our young readers. Each student will have a personal copy to read from, take notes with, and refer back to during discussions. The students are responsible for reading certain chapters per week and completing a specific literacy skill based graphic organizer. After completing the reading and graphic organizer, the group reconvenes to discuss their findings, clarify any misunderstandings, and make solid inferences based on their schema and text-evidence.
