My school is a title 1 urban school located in Jacksonville, FL. My school's community is classified as low socioeconomic families. Our school's grade has been a F for two years. We have many students who are frequently tardy or absent. Much of this comes from the students' culture, economics, and means of transportation. Days when it is raining or extremely cold, our attendance tends to be lower because students will not walk in the bad weather. For some of my students, art is the reason they get up and come to school. Having more opportunities to explore art would just be another reason for them to make the journey to school each day. As an educator, I want to inspire them to be excited about learning and become life long learners. I believe giving them the opportunity to work with clay will spark that excitement.
